Our Buckland, a summer only publication of Buckand Center news
Thanks to the generosity of church member and former Buckland resident, Sue Chadwick, in April 2024 our church received four issues of “OUR BUCKLAND,” a community newsletter published every few weeks beginning July 23, 1949. “They are so much fun to read!” she said. Later in the summer, after she had read them all, Sue gave us her remaining collection.
About a week after accepting Sue’s initial gift, we found more than a dozen additional editions of Our Buckland in the church files.
Each edition is full of local Buckland tidbits of news, poetry, and commentary for the years 1949 to 1955.
The originals appear to have been originally typed up on a manual typewriter and printed by mimeograph machine on now what is aged yellowed paper. The originals have been placed in chronological order, into 3-ring binders, with pages protected in archival plastic sleeves. With Sue's blessing all the issues have been given to the Buckland Historical Society for their collections.
As with anything found that is decades old, there are mysteries to solve – for example, the writers of the articles and poetry are either not identified at all or by initials only. Who is G.G.? Who is G.A.M.? J.H.? L.A.W.? G.E.G.? You get the idea…
We were able to identify several other individuals and we have added our findings in the transcribed digital reports.
We did not find any issues dated 1954...Our heartfelt thanks to the individuals who lived and worshiped here many decades ago, and to those who have protected and preserved the memories, then and now, for generations to come.
