Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper March 4 at 6:00
Traditionally, the three days before Lent were known as Shrovetide, a time when priests would hear confessions, determine penance, and grant absolution. Once the communicants were properly “shriven,” entire villages would spend the Tuesday before Lent feasting and celebrating. Since Lent was a time of abstinence—from meat, fat, eggs, and dairy products—the menu for Shrove Tuesday was designed to use up all the fatty foods in the kitchen.
In keeping with this ancient tradition, we will have a family supper of pancakes with butter and maple syrup, latkes with sour cream and applesauce, and Avery’s sausage. Ted Wirt and the New England Saxophone/Wind Quartet will bring us some Dixieland jazz, and some of our Rose Dixwell music students may play as well. We may not be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, but we promise good food and good fellowship for all.
Bring your friends!
